SSL domain validation: DNS, email and HTTP checks

Prepare DNS, email or HTTP validation for your SSL certificate. Check domain access, challenge records and common failures before requesting issuance.

A domain registered in Bangladesh still needs the issuing authority’s domain checks. The domain registrar, DNS operator, hosting provider and purchasing team may be different people. Identify who can make the required change before ordering, especially when an agency or government IT team manages the DNS.

This checklist applies to publicly trusted website certificates. Available methods depend on the issuer, product and requested names. The order’s instructions take priority over examples from another certificate or a previous renewal.

A practical checklist

01

Confirm every hostname

List the root domain, www and other required names exactly. A URL path is not a hostname. Check wildcard coverage separately, and ensure the person responsible for DNS or hosting is authorized to approve the request.
02

Choose a supported method

DNS validation needs access to the authoritative DNS zone. HTTP validation needs the challenge location to be publicly reachable. Email validation uses an issuer-supported address or contact mechanism; an arbitrary personal address is not automatically eligible.
03

Copy the current challenge precisely

Preserve the specified record type, name and value. Some DNS panels append the zone name or interpret a CNAME target as relative. Preview the resulting fully qualified name. Do not replace existing mail, website or verification records to make space.
04

Check what the issuer can see

Verify authoritative DNS responses or fetch the exact HTTP challenge URL from outside the hosting network. Look for duplicated domain suffixes, old values, access restrictions and proxy behaviour. Wait for relevant cached answers to expire before repeatedly retrying.
05

Finish validation and record ownership

Request the issuer’s validation check, then confirm the order status. Keep any persistent record required for automated renewal. Record the responsible person and method for future reissuance; a successful old order does not guarantee a new order is already validated.

Common problems and decisions

DNS challenge not found

Check the authoritative nameservers rather than assuming the registrar hosts DNS. Confirm the actual record name, value and type. If DNSSEC or CAA fails, investigate that problem instead of repeatedly replacing the challenge.

HTTP challenge returns a page or redirect

An application, login screen, firewall or CDN may intercept the challenge location. Follow the issuing authority’s allowed response and redirect rules. Do not turn off broad security protections when a narrowly scoped path exception is sufficient.

Wildcard or email method unavailable

Supported methods vary. For example, ACME HTTP-01 cannot validate wildcard names, while DNS-01 can. A commercial issuer’s CNAME or email process is not interchangeable with an ACME TXT challenge.

Prepare for the next conversation

Send support the affected hostname, issuer/order reference, chosen method, error text and time of the last change. Share challenge values only through the order’s approved workflow. Keep DNS account passwords, API keys and private keys out of email. Ask who will maintain validation access during the subscription term.

Common questions

Does paying for SSL validate my domain?

No. Payment authorizes commercial processing; the certificate authority still needs successful validation for the requested names.

Can one DNS record validate every certificate?

Only when the issuer’s documented workflow supports that scope and reuse. Do not assume a record from another provider or order will work.

How long does validation take in Bangladesh?

There is no fixed country-specific time. Access, DNS caching, the selected method and issuer checks affect completion. A pending check is not a guaranteed issuance deadline.

Should I remove the validation record afterward?

Follow your issuer’s instructions. Some records are temporary; others support later validation or automated renewal and should remain in place.
