A wildcard such as *.example.com covers matching first-level subdomains, including shop.example.com and mail.example.com. It does not cover deeper names or a different domain. Check the selected product for root-domain coverage.
A wildcard SSL certificate uses an asterisk in a domain name to cover matching subdomains at one level. It can suit a business running several services under the same domain, such as a shop, customer portal and mail service.

A wildcard may simplify coverage for several subdomains, but the right choice depends on your website list. For just one website, compare single-domain SSL. Confirm installation and ongoing support separately in your quotation.
Give your technical team a clear domain list, validation plan and installation checklist.
List the root domain, required subdomains and any deeper names. Identify each server, proxy or hosting service where the certificate will be installed.
Confirm the CA-supported wildcard validation method. Arrange DNS access if required; ordinary HTTP file validation does not validate a wildcard name. Generate the CSR in your environment and keep the private key there.
After issuance, install the certificate and chain in each agreed location and check every required website. New matching subdomains still need a working TLS setup.

www.example.com matches *.example.com. The root example.com is a separate name, so check the selected product’s stated root-domain coverage before buying.
The wildcard pattern can match many first-level names without listing each one separately. Coverage stays at that level: *.example.com does not match shop.eu.example.com. Check the product’s deployment and licensing terms as well.
A new name that matches the existing wildcard pattern does not need to be added individually to the certificate. Its service still needs the valid certificate, chain and appropriate TLS configuration.
A wildcard for example.com does not cover example.net. Choose multi-domain SSL for specified names across domains, or a product explicitly supporting multiple wildcard names when you need wildcard coverage for each.
DV verifies control of the domain. OV also verifies organization details and may suit an organization’s purchasing requirements. Both need domain checks; OV does not provide broader wildcard coverage or inherently stronger encryption.
You need access to complete the method supported by the certificate authority. If it uses DNS validation, arrange the required record change with your DNS administrator. HTTP file validation cannot validate the wildcard name; confirm the available method before ordering if access is limited.
Check the selected product’s licensing and your hosting requirements. Name coverage does not install the certificate automatically. Plan each deployment and protect private keys; separate certificates and keys may be more appropriate for independently managed systems.
